PRACTICES AND REFLECTIONS ON THE INCLUSION OF VISUAL IMPAIRMENT IN HIGHER EDUCATION
Keywords:
Teacher training, Visual impairment, Inclusive educationAbstract
The inclusion of students with visual impairments in higher education represents a growing challenge and, at the same time, an opportunity to improve pedagogical practices aimed at equity. This article presents an experience report by a Physiotherapy professor upon receiving a student with a visual impairment. This experience prompted reflections on teacher preparedness, institutional support, the use of accessible educational technologies for descriptive communication, and participation in continuing education courses. The report was developed based on practical experience and grounded in theoretical references on inclusion, accessibility, and teaching innovation. It was observed that the use of verbal descriptions supported collective learning and that artificial intelligence-based technologies expand the possibilities for sensory mediation in higher education. It is concluded that continuing education and the ethical use of technology are pathways that strengthen inclusive education and make the teaching-learning process more accessible and participatory
